Prices and full specs are in the comparison table and picks below.
My rule for this list: a micellar casein protein powder sold on Amazon for under $40, whose listing names micellar casein, with at least 300 ratings. Free delivery without Prime preferred when Amazon showed it on the day I checked. I also show cost per 25 g of protein so a 19 g scoop doesn’t look cheaper than a 26 g scoop.
Why I made it: when I searched for casein under $40, the big “nighttime casein” roundups started around $45. One guide updated Nov 4, 2026 (prices checked Nov 1) listed Ascent at $44.99, Legion at $64.99, and ON around $49. Search snippets still showed BodyTech Rich Chocolate at $37.99 — on Nov 6, 2026 Amazon had it at $44.99. Nobody had a dated Amazon shortlist of micellar casein that is actually under $40 right now, so I made one.
How I built it: this guide is research-based. I compared current Amazon listings, their nutrition panels, ingredient lists, and Amazon’s review summaries. I haven’t used these three powders myself. Prices are what Amazon showed on Nov 6, 2026, so check the price in your cart before you buy.
I’m a fitness enthusiast, not a doctor or dietitian. This is supplement shopping, not medical advice. Casein is a milk protein — skip it if you avoid dairy. If you have a medical condition, allergies, or take medication, talk to your doctor before adding a supplement.

What to check before you buy
- Look for “micellar casein,” not just “casein.” Micellar is the slow-digesting form most people want before bed. Some blends mix in calcium caseinate.
- Do the per-gram math. Scoops here run from 19 g to 26 g of protein. Cost per 25 g keeps the comparison fair.
- Expect thicker than whey. Casein gels more in liquid. Use a shaker or blender, and more liquid if you hate chalk.
- Unflavored vs flavored. Unflavored is usually cheaper per gram and easier to dump in yogurt or a smoothie. Flavored is easier as a straight shake.
- Add delivery. A $29.99 tub isn’t a deal if you pay shipping on a solo order under $35.
The picks
1. Nutricost Casein (Vanilla): best for most people
This is the one I’d point most people to if they want a flavored casein under $40. The 2 lb Vanilla tub was $38.95 with free delivery, 28 servings of 25 g, which is $1.39 per 25 g of protein. It’s rated 4.5 from 1,505 ratings, the biggest review count of anything that met my price and free-delivery cut. The listing calls out 100% micellar casein at 25 g per scoop. Ingredients: micellar casein (with sunflower lecithin), natural and artificial flavors, salt, and sucralose. Amazon’s review summary says buyers like it for overnight use and baking; taste is mixed, and chalky/grainy texture comes up a lot — normal casein complaints, but worth knowing. Chocolate was the same $38.95 with fewer servings (26 × 24 g = $1.56 per 25 g) and a lower 4.2 rating. Check price on Amazon
2. NAKED Casein (1 lb): lowest tub price
If you want the cheapest checkout under $40 and a single-ingredient tub, this is it at $29.99. Naked lists only micellar casein, 26 g of protein per serving (2 rounded scoops), and NSF Certified on the listing. It’s rated 4.5 from 2,169 ratings. Cost per 25 g is higher at $1.92 because the bag is only 15 servings. Free delivery needed a $35+ order or Prime when I checked, so pad the cart or expect shipping. Amazon’s review summary says buyers like the clean label; taste is bland (it’s unflavored), and mixability is split — use a blender. The 2 lb bag was $49.99, so it missed my under-$40 rule. 3. NOW Sports Micellar Casein: clean label + free delivery
For an unflavored tub with free delivery and a short label, NOW was $36.75 (list $44.99) for 34 servings of 19 g, which is $1.42 per 25 g. Ingredients are just micellar casein and 1% sunflower lecithin. It’s rated 4.2 from 345 ratings and was an Amazon’s Choice when I checked. You need more scoops to hit 25–40 g before bed because each scoop is only 19 g. The product page had a California Prop 65 lead warning — common on some dairy powders; decide for yourself. Amazon’s review summary praises the simple formula and value; taste/mix feedback is mixed on unflavored casein. Check price on Amazon

- Watching cost per gram with free delivery? Nutricost Unflavored was $1.35 per 25 g on the same day (same brand as pick 1).
FAQ
Is casein better than whey before bed? Casein digests more slowly than whey, which is why people use it overnight or between long gaps. Total daily protein still matters more than the clock. I’m comparing tubs, not coaching your macros.
Will it taste chalky? Often thicker and chalkier than whey. More liquid, a blender, or mixing into yogurt/oatmeal helps. Don’t expect a thin whey shake.
Micellar vs casein blend? Micellar is the slow form. Some popular tubs blend micellar with calcium caseinate. My picks list micellar as the protein source.
Does unflavored taste like nothing? Close to nothing in milk or a smoothie. Straight in water, most people won’t love it — that’s the trade for a clean label.
Honorable mentions: good caseins that missed my rules
Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Casein (Creamy Vanilla). The big name. $49.99 for 25 servings of 24 g ($2.08 per 25 g), free delivery, 4.6 from 5,861 ratings. It missed under $40. The listing’s protein blend is micellar casein plus calcium caseinate, with inulin, gums, and sucralose. If you want the most-reviewed tub and don’t mind going over $40, it’s the default a lot of people buy. Check price on Amazon
Ascent Casein (Vanilla Bean). $44.99 for about 28 servings of 25 g ($1.61 per 25 g), free delivery, 4.3 from 761 ratings. Missed under $40. Listing uses monk fruit (no artificial sweeteners) and claims Informed Choice. Confirm the serving count on the bag — the page mixed “24” and “28” servings when I checked. Check price on Amazon
